Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival’s Production Co-ordinator, Andisa ‘Aja’ Andwele, speaking with some of the event’s stakeholders during yesterday’s site visit at Pirates Cove.

All is well, says Gilkes

Ticket sales for events for the upcoming Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival have been going well.

Director of FAS Entertainment Inc., Al Gilkes, disclosed this, adding that at this point sales are as good as those in 2015.

“Ticket sales are on par with last year, so we don’t expect to be groaning and moaning. We think that if we don’t exceed, we at least would have the same numbers at all the events or close to the same numbers as we had last year. So everything is going well.”

His comments came while speaking to the media during a site visit yesterday at Kensington Oval. This location is one of the three venues to be used during the Festival, which takes place from April 24 to May 1.

Gilkes also spoke to the media about the new venue, Pirates Cove, to be used for the Reggae Beach Party. He pointed out that this venue is more spacious and different from previous locations used.

“Our previous Beaches were 10 per cent beach and 90 per cent solid cement or otherwise, but this year we really have a Beach Party because it is all on the beach. Pirates Cove is a recently developed venue. It has its own large bar…, it has a large area where you can sit [and] it also has shaded areas where people can cool out if it gets too hot.”

Though stating that a final decision is yet to be made, Gilkes additionally disclosed a possible change to be made to the VIP section for Reggae on the Hill.

“Our main concern, because people have been asking us about it, is the layout of the VIP area. Unfortunately, because of the lie of the land, it is very difficult to have a flat VIP and there are a lot of roots…, the roots create a significant problem for people walking.

So this year, we are working with our technical people to see how we can put a platform and walkways where people would better able to traverse the area and to be happy with what is there.” (MG)
