Teague James and Allison Downes during their winning performance of ‘The Lecture’.

Advocate staff show off their talent

They got it right!

There was no disputing or disagreements when the results of the Advocate Staff Talent Show were announced this year by the Human Resources Manager, Ms. Natalie Browne.

Though the competition had the lowest number of entrants in its near 20-year history, it was clear that there was no shortage of talent. In the end, the duo of Teague James and Allison Downes from the Editorial Department took home the top spot for their piece ‘The Lecture’, which portrayed a day at the office with Publisher of The Barbados Advocate, Sir Anthony T. Bryan, with James in the role of the boss and Downes playing his secretary. A fan favourite, James’ portrayal brought the staff to laughter as he gave a stern lecture to his staff on the best way to produce a stellar product, with frequent interruptions via phone calls from employees of the various departments.

James has proven himself a worthy competitor year after year and has been labelled by some as the “Red Plastic Bag of the Advocate Talent Show”, while Downes has been a steady competitor each year, usually singing karaoke.

Second place went to the team from the Sports Department with Sports Editor Corey Greaves, along with sports journalist Andre Springer, giving some useful tips for self-defence that both ladies and gentlemen could make use of if they are ever caught in a situation that threatens their safety, while sports journalist Michael Phillips portrayed the ‘thug’ who attempted to attack Springer. Though martial arts has been the mainstay for the Sports Department in recent years, the demonstration of genuine martial arts techniques as well as some humour, especially coming from Phillips, who was not your ordinary ‘criminal’, was a hit with the crowd.

The third spot went to a frequent winner at the Advocate Christmas Party and Talent Show, Senior Reporter Regina Selman-Moore, who did a dramatic piece entitled, “A Tale About Ham”.

Selman-Moore entertained the audience with her piece, showing off not only her drama skills, but also her writing talent, acting ability and creative imagination, as she spoke about possible incidents that can occur around this time of the year as persons go about their day-to-day business.

All in all, everyone appreciated the talent of those who participated, topping off the sumptuous Christmas cuisine with lively entertainment. Moreover, no one could argue with the judges' decisions after the show concluded, because this year they got it right.
