Adamson: CXC candidates will not be disadvantaged

Students unable take their Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams yesterday due to the passage of Hurricane Elsa are being reassured they will receive a grade.

Acting Chief Education Officer Joy Adamson said while CXC does not reschedule the exams, its “adverse conditions policy” will be applied.

During a press conference on Thursday evening, she explained, “That means that the students who would have been writing the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations – the CXC will be using their adverse conditions policy and no candidate will be disadvantaged.”

Giving further information yesterday, Adamson said, “If a student was scheduled to do Chemistry paper, CXC will do an evaluation on the other paper they will write. Both (English) Literature papers were planned for today [yesterday], so CXC will have to do an alternative paper if necessary, because Barbados and other islands will be impacted and therefore they have to put things in place for that situation.”

She therefore urged students not to worry that they would be negatively impacted by the situation. “Due to natural disasters or other events CXC will put mechanisms in place to ensure that students are not disadvantaged in any way. So students you should not fear, we will work with you to ensure that you will be given a grade for the CXC exams you have missed,” she assured.
