103 tablets donated to four St. Lucy Primary Schools

During the academic year 2016/2017, 600 Class 3 students particularly from rural schools, are set to receive Samsung tablets.

The initiative of the Aron and Christina Foundation continued in St. Lucy last Wednesday when 103 of the devices was presented to students of Half-Moon Fort, Ignatius Byer, Selah and St. Lucy Primary Schools.

During the presentation ceremony held at the Daryl Jordan Secondary School, Member of Parliament for that constituency, the Hon. Denis Kellman thanked Aron and Christina Truss, the founders of the Foundation which started in 2009 with the purpose to promote and facilitate children’s education at the primary and secondary levels in Barbados.
“The Aron and Christina Foundation has remained strong and unwavering in its commitment to education and to the children of Barbados.

Please accept our deep gratitude for your profound contribution over the years. Thank you for caring for our nation’s children by your active investment in their development. A development that is crucial in the transitioning of our ‘developing nation’ status,” he expressed.

Kellman, who is the Minister of Housing, Lands and Rural Development shared that he has witnessed first-hand what the effects of technology can offer students. As the father of two sons, one who suffers with autism, he said that he is constantly amazed at his use and command of the technology available to him.

“I have personally witnessed its many benefits,” he stressed.

“I implore you teachers to please make use of this technology in the class room. Engage your students in research, problem-solving, reading, typing some of which could be a new world for them. You may be their first introduction to this new experience, guide them well. With the addition of the Internet they will truly have the world at their fingertips, a powerful tool for young hands and minds. Technology is the pen and paper of our time; it is the lens through which we experience much of our world,” he further noted.

The Minister also encouraged the students to care for and make the best use of the devices even while they have fun exploring the various applications.

Truss revealed to the students that the presentation of tablets was made possible through the continuous generosity of Keith Morris.

He revealed the Mr. Morris is yet another visitor to Barbados, who fell in love with the island and its people, and wanted to give back.

“He is actually British, but he spends a lot of time in Barbados and one of the reasons he comes here is because of our environment... Christina and I always want to remind you children to take care of the environment; do not to litter,” he urged.

“There has been a campaign about not littering in Barbados for many years and I don’t think enough Barbadians have heeded it. Therefore, one of the things that I will ask that you do for us is not to litter and to take care of the environment. As a nation that is 50 years we really shouldn’t be seeing snow cone cups on the road and people throwing things out of buses. I hope that you as our future generations don’t do that and I hope you also speak up when you see people doing it,” he urged.

Truss further revealed that the class three’s were selected because they are old enough to handle the responsibility of taking care of them and that it will assist them with preparations for the Common Entrance Exam. (TL)
