‘Nurses must lead the way’

Nurses should set the tone when it comes to the creation of new mechanisms which lead to an advancement in the development of efficient health-care systems and an enhanced quality of life for all persons.

This is according to Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Cheryl Alleyne, who delivered the address on behalf of Health Minister, John Boyce, at the Nurses Week Seminar yesterday at the Hilton Hotel.

“Nurses are at the centre of health-care delivery in Barbados, and are often identified as key practitioners in the achievement of various health programmes and activities. As the ‘front line’ staff in our health institutions, the contribution of nurses in Barbados cannot be overstated as you continue to assist in the achievement of the improvement of the health and well-being of our society,” she stated.

Alleyne also called on nurses to work in partnership with the Government of Barbados in the delivery of effective health care to the citizens of this country, so that this island can achieve its goal of better health care for all people by 2020.

“Nursing is the foundation of health care and while you lead the charge to advance nursing, you have one common aim, and that is also to improve patient care. In tandem with the advancement of nursing, nurses should set the tone for applying new measures to promote good health and improved quality of life. There is a bright beam on the future of nursing and I urge you to continue to participate and support the Government of Barbados in achieving better health care for all by 2020.”

She also advised nurses to view their profession as not just a science, but a specialisation.

“Nursing must no longer be seen as just an art but also a science, where the expanded roles of nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist are becoming more integral to the practice of nursing.”

The integral role that nurses are called upon to play which has been given to them by the international umbrella body of Nurses, International Council of Nurses (ICN) “to perform at management level while contributing to health policies locally, nationally and internationally” must also be carried out, advised the Deputy Permanent Secretary.
