‘Mr’ DJ defends title

Granville “Mr DJ” Carter successfully defended his title in the seventh edition of the National United Society of the Blind Calypso Competition. A full house came out to the Sir Hugh Springer Auditorium of the Barbados Workers Union Solidarity House to hear quality calypso and they were not disappointed.

The six contestants pulled all the tricks out of their bags to battle Carter for top honours, however he fought valiantly, securing his fourth consecutive win.
The other positions were:
2nd – Elviston “Size 2” Maloney
3rd – Errol “Redd Man” Greenidge
4th – Errol “De Phantom” Hurley
5th – Roger “Biggy Bear” Vaughan
6th – Richard “Mr Daze” Daisley
7th – Anna “Anna Be” Beckles
Some pockets of the audience were audibly dissatisfied with the results and had to be reminded that the judge’s decision was indeed final.

Mr DJ who was immaculately dressed in a suit of the national colours accumulated 400 points, with 22 point separating him from the nearest competitor. A bright smile was a clear indication of the elation which he was experiencing.
Prior to the competition he had shared that he had expected his strongest contender would be Size 2 and that was indeed the case. A generous contribution from the Andy Stuart Charitable Foundation ensured that every participant had a monetary component in the prizes which they received.

Queen Archibald’s theatrics had the audience laughing hysterically. Also on the cards were Biggie Irie who had the audience in the palm of his hands and also had the honour of returning to the stage for an encore performance. Donella and “J Slo” who are both known for their powerful vocals were also included in the entertainment line-up. (ST)
