‘Kids Cooking for Kids’ project to be launched soon

ONE local charity is expected to launch a project which focuses on children and nutrition this year.

President of Kiwanis Club Pride of Barbados (KCPOB), Donna Archer, revealed this before the relaunching ceremony of Toddler’s Park recently. The president explained that the project will be called “Kids Cooking for Kids” and it will focus on healthy meals for children.

“It is the President’s signature project and it is a project really with children designing menus for children. And they will be in such a way, one, they have to be healthy and two, they will be designed in such a way and prepared in such a way that young children of primary school age should be able to do one or two with minimum supervision from their parents,” said Archer.

She added that the club will be doing the project in conjunction with one secondary school and when the menu book is designed, it will be distributed to schools around Barbados. Archer said the project is expected to start around March 2018. The club leader was asked about the reasoning behind the project and she said in recent times, Barbadians have been complaining that children are obese and they are eating too much fast food.

“As a consequence, in trying to assist, Kiwanis International our goal is to look after the interests of kids. So with that in mind, that was why the project was conceptualised ... so that we can help. If we can save one child, we feel better than doing nothing at all,” said Archer.

The club, which has 26 members, has another project in the pipeline where they hope to develop a play area for the physically challenged this year. The president indicated that the organisation is seeking the assistance of Corporate Barbados for this “expensive feat”.

Speaking on the relaunching of the Toddler’s Park, President of KCPOB explained that the project started two years earlier, but the club ran into some difficulties and they stopped. With the refurbishment, the space features a new slide and repainted playhouse and benches through the sponsorship of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.

Archer added that on Heroes Day, the club along with sister club Kiwanis Club Pride Online will be beautifying the park with some additional plants. The club had adopted the park in Oxnards during the period, October 2012 to September 2013. (KPB)
