Saying Goodbye: Angela Edghill lays a wreath on her late husband’s graveside at the Christ Church Parish Church cemetery.

‘Father of Gall Hill’ remembered in service

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and MP for Christ Church West Central Joseph Matthew Edghill has been laid to rest.

In a short ceremony yesterday at the Christ Church Parish Church, the retired and well known pharmacist of Joe’s and Edghill pharmacies in Oistins was remembered for his generosity in helping those within his community.

Honoured last year with a play park in Gall Hill bearing his name, Edghill passed away at the age of 73 on April 20 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Due to his love for the constituency, which he served from 1994 for almost a decade-and-a-half, the ‘Father of Gall Hill’ who sponsored the community teams, was also heralded for bringing a sense of people-centred politics in his public career.

Reverend Michael Haynes delivered the brief sermon to the small gathering inside of the church and the hundreds who watched online due to the Covid-19 restrictions, which reduces funerals to ten mourners.

Citing John 14 vs 2, which outlines ‘My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am’, Haynes remarked that each person should find solace in these words insisting “My Father’s house is where I have always been accepted and loved” and “He will walk with me forever.”

He comforted the mourners by urging them therefore to stand on the promises of Jesus Christ and to know a place had been prepared for the late son of the soil and one day they would be together again.

Edghill leaves to mourn his wife of 46 years, Angela, and children John and Jomo Edghill and Nancy McClellan and his five grandchildren.
His body was interred in the church’s cemetery.
