Monsignor Vincent Harcourt Blackett, Priest-in-Charge at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, greeting Sonja Welch, Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office and Senator the Hon. Darcy W. Boyce, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Energy and Telecommunications, during the Urban Development Commission’s (UDC) 20th Anniversary Church Service, yesterday.

‘Be more creative’

A Catholic priest wants Barbadians to push their creativity.

Monsignor Vincent Harcourt Blackett says he is not satisfied that Barbadians are using their creative imaginations to “do things to even become world-class”.

“We have so many creative people; Barbados could be at the cutting edge,” he stressed.

“Like Obama, I would like to say to Barbadians, ‘We can; Yes, we can’ – we can change the situation. We can make transfiguration a reality… I would like to see the 270 000 Barbadians, I would like to see us really do what the Bible says, ‘Stand erect, steady your trembling knees and hold your head high.’”

The Priest-in-Charge at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church is calling on Barbadians not to be dreamers, but men and women of vision. He explained that vision is always about the future.

“Vision gives hope to people when they find themselves or they feel that they are in a hopeless situation. Vision engages people to move on, and not to sit and to wallow in what is happening around them but to move on. Vision asks of us that we keep our eyes fixed on that vision that is being handed out before us.”

Monsignor Blackett was at the time delivering the sermon during the Urban Development Commission’s (UDC) 20th Anniversary Church Service yesterday.

The UDC has been providing services and programmes that would assist in the alleviation of poverty; and enhance the sustainable quality of life and high standards of living within the urban development.

He therefore suggested that UDC take on a new feature – “that you do not become the place where people looking for houses would go. But that Urban would help people to be transformed, to be transfigured – both young and old”.

“Urban, can we do something to get people to be more creative, to be energetic, to use their God-given gifts?” (TL)
