EDITORIAL - Think of others this Christmas

It is the final countdown to Christmas 2017 and all across Barbados people are gearing up for the big day.

For weeks there has been evidence of the Christmas spirit as businesses, supermarkets and several stores decked out their walls with decorations and Christmas displays. Even the blue and yellow lights which remained throughout the City after the Independence celebrations lent themselves to the festive atmosphere of the Yuletide season.

For many Barbadians though, the festivities will be dampened by financial constraints as belt-tightening measures continue to impact us all and cost of living remains high.

Still, Christmas is about more than the festivities. Having a long menu with pricey foods is fine if you can afford it, but is not necessary. And while it is nice to be able to demonstrate one’s love and affection through gifts, it should not be mandatory. The story of Jesus Christ’s birth tells us that he was born to humble beginnings in a manger and lived his life similarly. Therefore, everyone is urged to remember the true meaning of Christmas and not associate this holiday season with materialism. Give thanks for whatever you have in your life and not dwell on the challenges – financial or otherwise – which you might be experiencing.

Furthermore, everyone is encouraged to think of others and not just themselves at this time. As a country many of us came together a few months ago to donate to our hurricane-ravaged neighbours in the Caribbean, and we should continue in this vein to give to those who are needy. As such, all Barbadians are encouraged to give generously to established charities like the Salvation Army or make donations to the various children’s homes across the island. Alternatively, individuals who are in financial constraints themselves can re-gift items that are in good condition or give of their time to others in the community. There are quite a number of elderly, poverty-stricken, or disabled people living alone who would enjoy something even as simple as companionship.

For those who can afford to make purchases, try to seek out local products, arts and crafts. There are numerous high quality local items that can be gifted and by doing so you would be supporting the local economy and reducing the import bill.

As we approach December 25th, remember that this date not only marks the birth of Jesus Christ, it is also a prime example of selfless giving. Jesus was a gift from God who loves us so much that He gave us His most precious gift, His son. Just as God gave selflessly, and His son also – performing miracles and acts of kindness throughout his lifetime – we too should try to give by showing charity, kindness and compassion to others all year round, and especially in light of the current economic climate.

Barbados prides itself on being a Christian society. Let us therefore be examples of this Christianity and embody the same qualities that Jesus Christ inspired in many of those who met him. God does not give us more of a burden than we can bear, but it is His wish that in overcoming our challenges that we grow closer to Him.
