BUSINESS MONDAY: Membership stable

Membership remains strong, revealed Michelle Ashby, Branch Operations Officer at the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-oper-ative Credit Union Ltd. (BPWCCUL).

She told Business Monday at the credit union’s Member Appreciation Day last week at Belmont Road that, “We are giving back to our members
because naturally our success is because of our members. The response was good and annually it is increasing...”

Ashby indicated, “It is true these are difficult economic times and we do find as a credit union we continue to grow because people turn to us. We are viewed differently than the banks and we are seen as an institution for the people there to help. It is the norm that people turn to their credit union in challenging times, thus in this climate we continue to grow.

“We put things in place to assist our members. As a matter of fact, we developed recently a new product called the micro business loan and this is a loan up to $5 000 where we assist our members with small business ventures. When we do see our members in difficulties, we call in our members and work with them. We offer debt consolidation, etc., but we do provide that dialogue that even if they lose their jobs, etc., we will work with our members.”

The credit unionist believes that moving forward, “We are optimistic, we are here to help. I believe that as things change that people adapt and we have seen a shift in priorities. Patterns are different, where people would have travelled a lot, etc. They have cut back in certain areas to be able to pay for something else, such as education, etc. There is more a focus on essentials because now you have to think of paying for your children’s education or back to school, etc...” (NB)
