Wales, Ellerton to clash in Capelli Cup final

Then there were two! After getting started back in September, the curtain is set to come down on the inaugural edition of the Barbados Football Association’s Capelli Sports Super Cup. Set for this coming Sunday at the Wildey Turf, Weymouth Wales and Ellerton will be going after the $50 000 top prize after making it out of the final four this past weekend.

Playing at the same venue, Ellerton were first to book their berth after pulling out a 1-0 win over the University of the West Indies Blackbirds. Captain Shakille Belle kept himself ahead of the rest of the pack as it relates to goals scored as he gave his team the game-winner in the 24th minute.

With the Blackbirds losing the ball after a corner kick at the other end, Ellerton mounted a counter-attack that saw Roshon “Speedy” Gittens blazing a trail as he moved quickly up the right flank. Punching a cross in to Belle at the far post, he took his time before shaking off Jaiden Miller and pushing the ball past Tito Beckles and keeper Kerry Holder to rack up his tenth goal of the competition.

The Blackbirds had the quality in their ranks to bounce back from this deficit but failed to look like the team they have been all tournament. The fact that Beckles earned to yellow cards to be given his walking papers in the 48th minute did not help their cause and Ellerton went down in history as the first finalists of the competition.

Arch rivals Weymouth Wales and the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme squared off in the other semi-final with the former securing their spot after a 3-1 result.

Wales had two goals in before the break as Romario Harewood and Shaquille Boyce knocked the ball home in the 18th and 28th minutes. The soldiers pulled on back as Nicholas Best saw a loose ball drop to his feet almost exactly on the penalty spot and he made no mistake with the shot, beating Omari Eastmond in the 36th. However, Wales would have the final say going the other way as Walton Burrowes got the ball past national senior custodian, Kishmar Primus in the 50th minute.
