St. Michael girls slam Combermere at home

To call it a beating would be an understatement, as the St. Michael School obliterated Combermere 34-6 in the National Sports Council Senior Girls Basketball competition on Thursday evening.

Playing at Waterford the home team would have been looking to use the home court advantage to their benefit but it turned out to be the girls toughest lesson to date. In fact Combermere went scoreless in both the second and last quarter.

St. Michael on the other hand were floating along the court with Tower Lorde and Zahra Ashby leading the charge. Lorde commanded the paint and finished with a game high 15 points and also ran the floor well to finish with the fast break layups when the defense lagged. Ashby scored 10 and Alesha Squires added 7 as the two guards commanded the floor well for St. Michael.

Combermere were out of their league against the defending champions and were down the entire game. They however had their best quarter in the first period, putting up 4 to the St. Michael 14 point effort. At half-time, the lead rose to 19, 23-4 but some poor finishing by St. Michael in the third, where they only outscored the opponents 3-2, eased the punishment on Combermere.

The final quarter was the icing on the cake cake for St. Michael as they pulled away to extend their unbeaten run in the tournament. Ebony Wint, Nyema Taylor and Nijole White all got on the score sheet with 2 points each for Combermere. (AS)
