Queen’s College claims U19 Boys 3x3 crown

THOUGH the final started slow, Queen’s College A slammed Harrison College B, 11-4 in the Under-19 Boys final of the National Sports Council 3x3 Schools Basketball Competition yesterday at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Queen's College had just seen their Under-16 team lose to Harrison College in the U16 final and were committed to taking the crown, Khaleb Gaskin led his side with a game high seven points to help claim the championship.
Khairi Thorpe, Ethan Ellis and Gaskin were fluid on the court and after they shook of the finals nerves, dismantled the HC defense with Thorpe scoring three points and Ellis putting up one.
Gaskin explained that the victory was what they needed especially due to the down to wire loss by the U16 team against HC 11-9.
“It feels great to win this final and this is something we wanted badly because when I was coming up playing Under- 16 especially. Every time we played HC we lost in the final two back-to-back years. Adding to that the pandemic stopped us from playing, so for two years we lost years and I for sure took those losses personally. So, we could not let them three sweep my QC team,” said Gaskin.
“The game plan for us was to keep the ball moving, play hard defence most of all and get the ball to the open guys while attacking when we had the opportunity. Most importantly we made sure to take our shots when the opportunity presented itself,” he added.
Tariq Durant scored two points and Nayiib Browne and Darin Weatherhead both added one point apiece for Harrison College.
In the U-16 final, Nathan Chapman of HC fought hard for the win with six points while Isaac Griffith had three and Tristan Catlyn added two. Zane Cox was also part of the team but was injured in the preliminary rounds.
