Alesha Squires of the St. Michael School was hot from behind the arc, hitting two three’s on her way to 14 points.

HC trounced by St. Michael School Cougars

Harrison College had a rough road game on Monday afternoon as they were welcomed into the St. Michael School Cougars lair with a 40 drubbing, 51-11 by the home team.

The beating was sound and thorough by the St. Michael School (SMS) girls as they won every quarter on their way to an easy victory over the only other

undefeated team in the tournament. Unbeaten up to that point, the defending champions dominated the game from start to finish though there was a slow start. It must have been the nerves of playing in front of their home crowdsitting in the newly installed bleachers.

The first quarter ended 4-2 to St. Michael and that must have been the most confident that Harrison College must have felt, only down two after ten minutes of play. That sense of relief was short lived when Alesha Squires blew up for ten of her 14 points in the second quarter. Squires smoked a trey to start the quarter and to finish it, ensuring that her side were off and rolling. By the end of the half, SMS were up 22-6.

Squires had help during the game from the top scorer for SMS, Tower Lorde. The tall forward was unstoppable in the paint and ran the floor well. She matched Squires second quarter effort of ten points and went on to finish with a game high 16. Lorde had the crowd roaring as St. Michael went into the final period ahead 43-8.

Zahra Ashby was the other double digit scorer in the game with 13 points, 7 of them in the fourth, having shot well and attacked the basket when the opportunity arose. With two good guards

handling the ball in Ashby and Squires along with Lorde working the key, Harrison College spent most of their time playing defence. The large number of turnovers in the game also did not help as SMS were able to enjoy the majority of the possession.

If the two teams meet in the final, St. Michael will not be able to run over HC as they did. Harrison College were without their top player Rebecca Simpson. Simpson is not only the best player for HC but also one of the top ballers of Combined Schools Lady Tridents. Jarissa Barnett tried her best to keep the ship afloat with the absence of Simpson, scoring nine of her teams 11 points in the game. (AS)
