Adalbert Browne to be honoured

The National Sports Council (NSC) has teamed up with X-Treme Body Mechanics Fitness to honour one of the island’s greater long distance runners, Adalbert Browne.

The honour will come in the form of a 10K race, which will be held on Independence Day at 4 p.m.. It starts from where Browne was born at Industry Hall and finishes at East Point, where the X-Treme gym is located.

The activities on this day also include a 5K walk and a Schools relay for those in the the St. Philip area.

The “Barefoot Beast” as he was commonly referred to, has never run a race in shoes, and has competed in at least 22 marathons, with his greatest moment being his win of the 1989 Run Barbados Marathon.

Formerly coached by Wibisco Stars Jerson Clarke, Adalbert became a household figure in running against some of the best marathon runners that came to Barbados.

The two-time winner of the National Sports Council’s groundsman of the year award is still employed in a trade he loves at the Wayne Daniel Complex in St. Philip.

It is indeed a great occasion when an organisation reaches out to compliment one of its workers who has reached the highest point of his career.

He presently enjoys preparing the wickets for the Brereton Cricket Club, and his pride and joy is seeing the young Primary School players taking part in the Guardian Group Herman Griffith Competition.

It was only two years ago that the NSC and the Guardian Group gave him an award at the finals at the Empire Club.

After the race, an Expo will be held where small businessmen and young Entrepreneurs will be showcasing not only their goods and services but also healthy food, drinks and talent, as a number of local singers will be performing along with demonstrations by the groujp at the X-Treme Fitness gym.

Special prizes will be awarded by the honourable Minister John King, who will be presenting an award to Browne as well as to the youngest and oldest competitor and the first NSC staff member to cross the finish line.

Cash prizes for the first three places will also be at stake. (CG)
