WIFI in parks could be a reality

The National Conservation Commission (NCC) is seeking to offer wireless Internet (WIFI) access within the surroundings of its parks.

General Manager Keith Neblett revealed that NCC is currently working with one of the island’s telecommunications providers to make this a reality.

Speaking to members of the media during the showcase of NCC’s work over the last 46 years, as part of its activities to mark Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence, he said the aim is to get Barbadians to take greater advantage of the many parks across the island. He stressed that the parks aren’t only there to host annual events.

“The reason why we are looking at that is because I think with the amount of funds that government has invested in terms of the maintenance of parks, people aren’t using them. Nearly everyone has a device and they should be able to use them at our parks and relax… Farley Hill isn’t only for Reggae on the Hill; Soca on Hill; Gospel Fest and Queen’s Park isn’t only there for Agrofest,” he pointed out.

Neblett expressed that there is a need to initiate activities so people will want to visit the parks.

Reflecting on the recent phenomenon “Pokemon” he pointed out, “Why can’t we develop a programme, in the parks, to encourage children to come in and let them go and have a treasure hunt with their phone or tablet and learn something at Farley Hill, Folkstone and Queen’s Park. Let us use the technology so that even when you come into the parks you find something active for children to do – to engage them.”

He further stated that, “We have had very interesting discussions with one of the providers and we are hoping that they are willing to come on board in partnership with us, not in terms of just providing the service, but providing some programmes that would encourage children to come in.

“The parks are free, open seven days a week. People need to go into the parks and relax,” he added. (TL)
