Zane Maloney second at World Series Karting Championships

Zane Maloney came away from a challenging weekend with an impressive second place in Sarno Italy in the final round of the World Series of karting championship over the weekend.

He had mixed results during the qualifying and Heats, and thus had to work his way through the field and up the order.

His mixed fortunes saw him first qualify 30th, start in Heat one in position 12th and finish 18th. He started Heat 2 in 12th and finished ninth, and started Heat 3 in 12th and finished seventh.

Heat 4 saw his best finish in the heats as he crossed the line in fifth.

When the points were tallied he was given a starting position of 13th for the pre-final and an outstanding drive saw him finish third. Maloney went into the final and started from sixth and by the halfway point he was leading the race. With the best karters in the world behind him he knew that it would be a huge battle on his hands as there was a five-kart tussle for six laps.

During this fight Maloney slipped as far back as fifth, but with one lap to go he and Mattia Michelotto opened a gap between themselves and the rest of the leaders.
Michelotto defended his position and won by five hundredths of a second from Maloney.

This result came at a perfect time as Maloney looks ahead to the first round of the FIA/CIK European Championships on April 20-23. The first round will be at the same track in Sarno and the second place had boosted Maloney’s confidence.

Helping him compete are his sponsors SOL, Rock Hard Cement, Bushy Park Barbados, Ricky Flynn Motorsports and ONE racing engines.
