Yellow House stings all other again at Springer Memorial

The Yellow House Stinging Bees gave the others a master-class in defence as they repeated as champions yesterday when Springer Memorial hosted their inter-house sports. Taking over the National Stadium for the day, the perennial queens of the track saw Yellow House racking up 657 points – eclipsing the 610.5 they made in 2019 – to come home well ahead of the other four houses.

The Blue Blazers were second with 563.50 – a marked improvement from their fifth-place finish last year. The Green House Tigers were a ways behind on 406.5 for third place while the Red House Fighting Phoenix (343.5) and the Purple House Titans (307.5) rounded out the pack.

The Victrix Ludorum title went to Azariah Alleyne as she amassed 101 points for the Bees Division 3. Taking wins 800, 1500 and 3000 Metre runs, as well as the Long Jump before the day, Alleyne had her hands in just about everything before winning the 400 in 65.84 seconds, the 200 Metre Hurdles (30.90) and finishing second in the 200 Metre behind Red’s Briana Baird (27.00) with 27.56 seconds.

T’Nia Lashley ran away with the Division 5 title as she blazed a trail for Blue House to 98 points. The 12 year-old won nine of her 10 events and came second in the other to have a stellar year and will surely be one to watch when the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships rolls around. Coming into the day, she had already won the 800, 1500, 3000, High Jump and Long Jump.

Yesterday, she continued her campaign and clocked 14.40 in the 100, 28.63 in the 200 and 16.95 in the 75 Metre Hurdles. She was second behind Alleyne in the 200 Metre Hurdles in 31.87 second. She put her name down in the books with a hot run of 64.96 in the 400 Metre, knocking down 66.07 left by Tristan Evelyn in 2010.

At the top of the school, Anika Blackman gave the Blazers 56 points in Division 1. She had podium finishes in five of her seven events, winning the Long Jump before going over to the Stadium. Yesterday, she was second in the 200 Metre with 26.00 seconds to give way to Deandra Foster of Blue (25.75), and the 100 Metre in 13.14 behind Green’s Zariah Greaves. However, where she shone brightest was in the hurdles events and she won the 100 Metre in 14.83 and the 400 in 75.26.

Kennedy Jackman was the top girl in Division 2 with 48 points for the Stinging Bees. Picking up points in other events, she got her biggest hauls from a win and a new record in the 400 Metre (61.92) and first-place finishes in the 800 Metre and Long Jump. (MP)
