Vikings, Saltfish rule their pools in Wonder Road Hockey tourney

Despite dropping points for the first time this past Thursday, Simplex Trading Vikings are still at the top of Pool A in the 2016 Wonder Barbados Road Hockey Tournament.

With last Sunday’s games rescheduled to Thursday at the Belfield courts, Vikings went down to Legends, giving them their first win of the season.

At halftime, Legends had put in some work to lead five goals to two, through the efforts of Curwin Brewster (2) and Dwayne Webb (3). Laurando Davis and Deron Harper scored for Vikings in the first half. Legends extended their lead into the second through a goal from Dario Jordan. However, Vikings had a surge featuring goals from Keron Taylor (1), and Akeil Craig-Browne (3). Vikings effort was not enough ads Jordan ended with a hat-trick of his own to take the score to eight-six.

There was an identical scoreline in the following game which saw CM Catering Zionites and Eagles locking horns. In this match-up, Zionites were forced to come from behind to take the win as Eagles outscored them, four goals to two by the half. Shaquille Callender got Eagles off the ground, while Hakeem Thompson and Che Roach (2) also chipped in before the break. For Zionites, Mario Moore scored both goals.

It was almost one-way traffic when the teams switched sides with Akeel Trotman Grant scoring twice, Moore picking up a third goal, Damien Downes getting a brace of his own and Paul Gill adding one. Eagles’ other goals came from Roach and Kibira Foster.

Pool B action on the night got off to a rather salty start as Strike Force were decimated by defending champions Saltfish. Che Warner scored twice with one each from Dexter Clarke and Shavone Goddard to take Saltfish to four at halftime. Strike Force scored twice before the break through Javier Wharton and that would be all they could muster for the rest of the game. Dexter Clarke came back in the second with back-to-back goals to finish up his beaver-trick. Ron Phillips made it eight-two to keep Saltfish unbeaten.

Also playing in Pool B, Spirit took a five-four win over SMC Communications Vigilantes. Akobi Aymes (2) and Kris Holder scored three goals to eclipse one from Angel Thompson by the half. In the second, a brace from Shawn Harewood drew Vigilantes level before Holder tipped the scales again. Armani Prescod added a fifth for Spirit while Rohan “Teno” Thomas brought Vigilantes back within one before the end of the game.

Vikings got another chance at picking up points and got their hands on one after a draw with ROGCOL Enterprises Royals.

The teams were tied at both breaks with two goals apiece coming in the first half and one each in the second. Laurando Davis got his name of the score sheet first this time for Vikings. However, Jamar Lashley scored twice to put Royals ahead. Keron Taylor scored before the break to tie things up. In the second half, Deron Harper netted for the Royals while Taylor made it three each.
