UWI Games return to Cave Hill campus
THE University of the West Indies (UWI) Games have returned to the Cave Hill Campus. Cave Hill finished second last time the biennial Games were held, but according to Head of the Sports Academy Amanda Reifer and Deputy Principal Prof. Clive Landis, they are looking to defend home turf and win the title as they did in 2011 when they last hosted the multi-sports games in Barbados.
Each campus will be allotted 150 athletes to cater for the 10 sports, which will be contested between the Cave Hill Campus (Barbados), Mona Campus (Jamaica), St. Augustine Campus (Trinidad), and the Open Campus (Online). Approximately 600 athletes from across the Caribbean will take part in ten sporting disciplines: basketball, football, tennis, swimming, table tennis, track and field, volleyball, cricket, netball and hockey.
According to Landis, the games initially began as part of the initiative by the students in the 1960s and eventually became built into the architecture of UWI.
The launch of the 2017 edition of the Games took place at the Usain Bolt Complex, along with the launch of the OneUWI app, which will cover all the games and was created by Theo Taylor and Janak Sodha.
This year’s Games are set for May 24 to June 2 and has been dubbed “The Making of Champions”. Along with the athletes, around 200 supporters are expected.
The Games will be free entry to the public.
