Tridents mentor young cricketers

A handful of the island’s young cricketers got an opportunity yesterday to rub shoulders with world-class players when the Tridents Pride of Barbados descended on the Cric-mechanics Camp at Wanderers.

With the Barbados franchise currently playing some home games in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League, South African star David Wiese; and Shamar Springer, one of the heroes in the victorious West Indies Under-19 team, paid a visit to the campers to share some pointers and a few words of encouragement.

With the players readying themselves for today’s matchup against the Trinbago Knight Riders, Team Manager Jason Harper explained that the visit was one that not on the cards, but that it came about due to the
relationship shared by Head Coach at Cric-mechanics Corey Edwards and many of the players on the team.

“It wasn’t scheduled or planned. Corey has been a friend of a lot of the guys for a long time and he wrote us and we dropped in. This is probably the only unscheduled, non-sponsored stop we have had and we just want to support him. We see what he is trying to do. He is qualified and he is trying to qualify more coaches, he is trying to improve the instruction and the quality of technique in the players, and this is us trying to support another brother. We also wanted to bring some of the guys out to see what we are capable of at the junior level,” Harper said.

With the camp paying special attention to the honing of technical skills in batting, bowling and fielding, it runs up to September 2  and is open to more players.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, Edwards took the opportunity to thank the Tridents for coming out despite their busy schedules and stated that the visit meant a lot to the work being done in moulding the young players.

“I hope that it would mean that more children are inspired to come out. If they want to be as successful as these guys, they know they have to come and put in the work and that is what Cric-mechanics is all about – helping someone who is really interested, who wants to put in the work and really loves the game, to improve himself.

“Everyone will not always be at the same stage but if you come in and put in that work consistently, I reckon that you will be as successful as these guys or even better,” he said.  (MP)
