Top riders toasted at BEA Awards

Roberta Foster, Zoe Archer and Sara Jones were among the top performers for 2017 when the Barbados Equestrian Association held their annual awards ceremony recently. With the island’s best riders competing at home and abroad in local, regional and international events, they were all honoured for their most impressive showings throughout the year.

This year’s local events saw jumpers and dressage riders taking on the Little League and Super League series, while the Caribbean Equestrian Association’s Caribbean Dressage Challenge and Regional Jumping Challenge provided opportunities for riders to compete against the region’s top riders. On the world scene, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) was in the island once again as the World Dressage Challenge (WDC) was contested by Barbados’ best.

At present, Barbados stands atop the pile in the WDC as Foster is currently in first place with an adjusted score of 83 per cent at the highest level of competition – Intermediate 1. Along with her partner Chichic, Foster will be hoping to close out the year at the top of the world standings after finishing fifth in the Prix St. Georges last year and first at the Advanced Level in 2015.

Also doing well in the competition is Bree-Anne Hurdle and Vivaldi who are sixth in the Youth Division, while the Barbados Dressage Team is eighth worldwide.

After putting in massive amounts of work over the past few months in the US, Archer was able to achieve FEI qualification in Three-Day Eventing for next year’s Central American and Caribbean Games. Performing well across Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country also allowed the youngster to cop the Amanda Howell Eventing Trophy for the Top Eventer for the Year.

At home, Jones was almost unstoppable as she took home the most awards in show jumping inclusive of the coveted Amanda Howell Awards for Best Retrained Thoroughbred and Best Jumping Thoroughbred. (MP)
