Thousands take part in CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk

Thousands gathered at the D’Arcy Scott roundabout to show their support for Breast Cancer and its awareness by participating in the 5K and 10K run and a 5K walk. The sweltering sun served as no deterrent. As the group gathered from just after 3:00 p.m., they were greeted by representatives from the title sponsors.

Managing Director of CIBC Barbados, Donna Wellington stated, “I am delighted and almost overwhelmed to see all of you who have come out to join us in this walk this evening. I use the word cause because this is more than a walk or a run, you represent a movement by your presence here in such numbers, you’ve demonstrated that like us, you care about the impact that breast cancer has in our society on our women. You also demonstrate that you care about raising awareness but more than just awareness, you also show that you care about raising much needed funds to support our breast screening programmes so that they are able to offer diagnostic treatment to scores of women across the country.”

She continued by reminding all that their efforts will not sum to zero; but in fact, they are all heroes. “Ladies and gentlemen by joining us this evening, you will change a life; you will save a life. By your presence and participation, you are a part of a regional movement of thousands of women, men and children who have gathered similarly to offer support and hope.”

This is the 5th year that CIBC First Caribbean organised the walk across the region and over the last 5 years, they have raised over $1 000 000 US regionally. Here in Barbados, the bank raised $200 000 BDS, all of which will go to the breast screening programme to support their life giving work.
