Technique FC Camp off to a solid start

Several of the island’s young footballers currently have an opportunity to hone their abilities both on and off the pitch as the Technique FC Summer School Camp runs into its second week. The five-week camp which is being run at the Lester Vaughan Secondary School, still has spaces as it caters to development of both the sporting and academic skills of the campers.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, Technical Director Adrian Mapp stated that the camp was not catering to just members of the club, but also students from surrounding schools such as Sharon Primary, Holy Innocents and Hillaby Turners Hall. With the present roll numbering 40, the campers are divided into three groups with Under-9 catering to kids from five years old, the Common Entrance group dealing with Class 3 and Class 4 students, and a secondary school group up to the age of 15.

Noting that the camp was capable of accommodating 75 up to 100 students, Mapp said that on the academic side, the focus was primarily on Mathematics and English. With about nine girls enrolled in the camp, Mapp went on to mention that he also had some young female coaches working in the club and camp structure.

Scheduled for an August 5th finish, the camp has gotten off to a strong start and Mapp gave his thoughts on why he believed the marriage between sport and academics was so important. “This is now the second week and the idea of the camp is to merge football and academics so that, at the end of the day, we want to have intelligent players. We are not all going to be professional footballers, but they can be professional in their own right, so they need to have some academics. If you are going to have a scholarship, you are going to need the academic background. So the idea is basically to merge the two and to help those children who have issues with the academic side of things so that when they get back to school, they would be ready to undertake whatever comes their way. The reception to football is excellent! With regard to the academics, some of them are quite good but then they are others who need the work and would try to shy away but it is compulsory,” he said.  (MP)
