Team draughts tournament coming

Some of Barbados’s top draughts players are expected to match knowledge, skills and wits from October 11, when the annual Lodge Road Draughts team tournament commences at Lodge Road, Christ Church.

Five teams took part last year but the organisers are prepared to accept a sixth team.

The St. Phillip-based Sharks with top players such as Anthony “Rat” Agard and Rawle “School Boy” Williams were winners last year but there are rumours at least one team will be substantially strengthened.

Richard Grazette, Ronald “Suki” King, who recently successfully defended his Masters title in the Henderson Layne invitational tournament, and Jeffrey “Socks” Clarke are also expected to take part.

Lodge Road Draughts Club President Hallam Hope said the players made the Henderson Layne event possibly the most competitive one to date. He said he anticipated the team tournament would be another successful undertaking.

The Club invested and re-arranged its seating as well as implemented strict COVID-19 protocols.

“I wish to thank the players and hard-working executive for the support and compliance to hold a safe and well-organised Henderson Layne competition,” Hope added.

Jack Francis and Anthony Agard placed second and third respectively in the Masters while Carl David won the Majors category with defending champion Ryan “Most Improved” Eustace finishing second and Wynell Neverson, third.

Matches were streamed via the Internet to global audiences. (HH)
