With 21 points, Tower Lorde led all scorers as her home team St. Michael
defeated Combermere 61-17.

St. Michael Girls victorious against Combermere

St. Michael made no mistake in showing their dominance in the court in the opening game of the National Sports Council’s Girls School Basketball Competition by obliterating Combermere 61-17.

Playing at home, St. Michael set the tone early with some outstanding defence on the floor. Steal after steal in the half court set allowed easy fast break points for the side. When Combermere was able to stall the break, St. Michael with the help of Tower Lorde still put the ball in the basket and came out 16-0 leaders after the first quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same, easy baskets for the home team while the visitors were having trouble even getting the ball to hit the ring. By the half-time break St. Michael had doubled their point total, while Combermere had only scored a single basket, 31-2. Combermere must be commended however – both the players and the spectators. One would not have been able to tell that their side was down or that they were the visitors. Despite being blown away, the support from the bench and spectators was significant.

It helped the team rally in the second half to a position where they were able to score some points. In fact they matched St. Michael point for point in the third quarter taking the scoreline to 38-9 with one more period to play. The third quarter was a wake up call for the home side however, and they did not like that Combermere showed signs of life. The response was a 23-8 final quarter to leave the visitors with something to remember them by.

In the end it was a 44 point blow out for the home side with Tower Lorde top scoring in the game with 21 points. Alesha Squires gave her support with 18 and Zahra Ashby was good for ten for a complete home team performance. Combermere’s leading scorer was Shade Carrington with ten points. (AS)
