Silver Sands stand atop Group A in Capelli Cup

Silver Sands kept their winning ways up and secured pole position in Group A as they kicked off the second round of games in the Capelli Sport Super Cup this weekend at the Wildey Turf. Playing in the first game on Saturday, they kept Central League Spartans under major pressure as they came out with a 2-0 win to see the Spartans winless and in a world of trouble after two games.

With both teams plying their trade in Division 1 last season, Silver Sands have been playing a notch above as they have just won their way back into the Premier League after a year’s absence. The Spartans looked to be putting up a fight as both teams returned to the dressing rooms without a goal in the first half, but once the sides were switched, Renaldo Sargeant (56th) and Derrine Gale-Forde (77th), who both scored in the first game, came in with the goods for another three points.

Right in the middle, Barbados Soccer Academy followed up an abysmal top-flight season with a 1-1 draw against Division 1’s Blackspurs. Soccer Academy, who never seemed to find their rhythm in the Premier League and were relegated after making it there for the first time, opened the scoring in the 12th minute compliments of a shot from Romario Dennie. However, Blackspurs had a reply in the 61st from Tevin Slater.
The night-cap saw former Premier League champions Weymouth Wales getting their campaign underway with a win over Brittons Hill. After starting their journey with a win over the Spartans, Brittons Hill were held to a 2-1 loss after holding the lead. Donte Greenidge struck first for the Valerie boys in the 8th, but Wales were back in the game in the 19th when Arantees Lawrence found the equaliser. Before the half broke, Wales had their second as Ricardio Morris got himself forward to score in the 31st.

On Sunday, Pride of Gall Hill made a move to the top of Group C when they opened the day with a 1-0 win over Pinelands. After getting started with a draw against Porey Spring, it was a goal from Shaquon Welch in the 24th that sealed the deal for the former Premier League side.

Game 2 saw it raining goals as 12 goals were tossed around between Checker Hall and Villa United. Villa got the better of the exciting exchange, coming away with a 7-5 result led by a five-goal haul from Norrin Corbin. He had goals in the 13th, 30th, 47th, 59th and 71st minutes after Nathan McCollin and Dario Blackman got the show started in the 1st and 4th minutes respectively.

Checker Hall were no slouches on the night and kept Villa on their toes as Javere Cumberbatch led their charge with a hat-trick of goals in the 4th, 16th and 22nd minutes. Tyreke Archer (25th) and Azari Collymore (89th) brought in the other two in the thrilling fixture that kept the fans on the edge of their seats.

Empire brought the curtain down on the night with a 1-0 win over St. Andrew Lions in a Premier League clash. It was a late goal from Jabarry Chandler in the 76th that tipped the scales in the favour of the Blues from Bank Hall.
