Set B reigns at Deighton Griffith

After breaking more than a decade of championship drought last year, Set B (Blue House) once again stands at the top of Deighton Griffith Secondary School’s Inter-House Sports.

Taking on the other houses on a hot day at the school grounds, Set B cut the grass on the track with the opposition to end the day with 1 427 points. In second place with 1 326.5 points was Set D (Green); while third was Set A (Red) with 1 206. Set C (Yellow) was fourth on 1 067.5 points.

There were four top athletes on the day as Rickyla Fagan and Akeba Pollard took home the Junior and Senior Victrix Ludorum titles; with Mario Best winning the Senior Victor Ludorum and Nathan Brathwaite the Junior Victor Ludorum.

Pollard was the best overall athlete, amassing a total of 98 points for Set A. She won seven of her events to take the U-20 Division title in addition to being named victrix ludorum. She was first in the 100m, 200m and 400m races; first in long jump, discus, javelin and shot put field events. She was also second in the high jump and fourth in the 800m.

Best, the U-20 Division Champion, was great as well, participating in a mammoth ten events to finish with 91 points for Set C. He was first in the 100m, 400m shot put and long jump events; second in the 200m, 800m and discus; third in the high jump; fourth in the 1 500m; and 5th in the javelin for an exceptional all-round show of talent.

U-15 Girl Rickyla Fagan of Set A shone brightly in the Junior Division with 81 points, having won the 100m, 200m, long jump, discus and shot put. She took silver in the 400m, bronze in the javelin and placed fourth in the 800m.
Brathwaite, hailing from Set D, finished with 61 points after placing first in the 100m, 800m and discus events. He was good enough for second place in the 200m and 400m, and took fourth in the 100m, fifth in the high jump and seventh in the javelin.

The First Form Boys' Division honours went to Mykehi Forde of Set B. He earned himself 44 points with a win in the 400m, silvers in the 100m, 200m and 800 and a fourth place finish in the high jump. Kishawna Niles was the top girl of First Form with 57 points for Set B. She won the 100m, 200m and high jump, crossed the line in second in the 400, and was fourth in the long jump, fifth in the 800m and sixth in the 1500m events.

The U-17 Boys' and Girls' champions were Daimar Clarke and Shontee Broomes, with 56 and 74 points respectively. Clarke, competing for Set A, was the distance specialist, and it showed with his golds in the 1500m, 800m and 400m races. He also placed second in the 200, fourth in the 100, fifth in the high jump and seventh in the javelin. Broomes ran for the winning house, Set B, and brought her house gold in the 100m, 200m, 1500m, high jump and long jump events. Second place in the 400m earned her a silver medal, and her last achievement was a fourth place finish in the 800m.

One record was broken throughout the championship at Deighton Griffith, and that was in the first form long jump. Set D’s Micahyah Thompson jumped a distance of 4.77m, which took down the 2005 record of 4.69m by Winimar Bourne of Set B. (AS)
