Secondary Schools Chess Champions celebrated

Proud parents, teachers and sponsors feted the Massy United Insurance Primary and Secondary Schools Chess Champions over the weekend with their respective prizes after another excellent season.

Corie Elcock, ironically the same coach of the winning Schools Charles F. Broome and Queens College respectively, was smiling the brightest as they took away the lion share of awards when the curtain came down at the ceremony at the Divi Southwinds Hotel.

“These teams two comprised some extremely dedicated individuals and that’s why we won,” said Elcock. “For the last three years the heartfelt support of our present and past principals, teachers, ancillary staff, assistant coaches, their parents and the most diligent Parent Teachers Association (PTA) embraced an unknown discipline and made it a priority.

“The sacrifice of time and the desire to succeed are the pillars on which these two Schools have stood for over the past forty years and the students responded to the challenge by even practicing in their vacation,” Elcock explained.

In delivering the sponsors address, Account Executive at Massy United Insurance, Dwight Lashley congratulated Charles F. Broome Sigma for their 100 percent record in the competition and also Queens College who dethroned Harrison College to win for the first time in 16 years.

“For over three decades we have been in partnership with the Barbados Chess Federation and every year we see improved performances, more teams and a higher level of competition which confirms that the investment is well worth it,” Lashley said to thunderous applause.
