Sao Paulo, Tsunami step up the ladder

Sao Paulo and Tsunami braved the scorching sands at Brandon’s Beach on Sunday to take the lead as the Barbados Football Association Beach Soccer Tournament continued in earnest. After sitting a little further down the standings after last weekend’s games, the two teams stepped up to first and second respectively on the same nine points after picking up two wins each this past weekend.

Moving from third place to first, Sao Paulo began the day with a six-five win over former leaders, Spartans. Two goals from Omar Archer and one each from Rommel Burgess Tedroy Marshall, David Newton and Antonio Corbin edged out the efforts of Andre Gill, Shane Hermas (2) Kemar Headley and Andre Pinder of Spartans. The other win was against Safe Harbour and this time, Sao Paulo won by five goals clear. Safe Harbour managed three goals from Jamanni Brathwaite (2) and Ahijah Hill, but the new leaders were led to eight goals by a beaver-trick from Burgess, while Corbin recorded a brace and Newton and Tito Grazette added one each.

Tsunami, now in second place only due to goal-difference, began their day with a nine-three win over the young but resilient Sting Rays. Akeem Bourne led the charge with a hat-trick, while Jabari Branford and Reshawn Boxhill both had braces. Kevin Phillips and the lone female, Racquel Waithe added one each to complete the task. For Sting Rays, Mikyle Bowen, Shaquan Haynes and Kavian Inniss scored one each. The second time around, Tsunami faced Safe Harbour to see the bottom-placed team getting their second loss for the day and their fourth for the tournament. Joevanni Bruce and Yannick Burrowes scored for Safe Harbour, while Branford was up front for Tsunami this time with a brace. Bourne, Boxhill and Codie Parris all had one each to bring up a total of five.

The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme are currently in third place after playing one game on Sunday. They helped to facilitate Spartans’ fall from grace as they fed them their second loss of the day. Despite two goals from Headley and third from Renico Williams, Spartans could do very little to withstand the force of the soldiers. It was the ‘Rashad Show’ as Rashad Jules (3) and Rashad Smith (2) scored all five of the goals for the Sports Programme.

The Sand Kings had only one game on the day and they made the most of it by beating the Sting Rays, four goals to two. Inniss scored a brace but it was not enough as Jamar Moore, Sachin Moore, Mark Armstrong and Kirvin Joseph all beat the Sting Rays keeper. The Sting Rays did not leave empty-handed as they won an earlier gamer against the embattled Safe Harbour. A single goal from Joevanni Bruce could not save Safe Harbour as goals from Bowen, Haynes and two from Inniss brought the Sting Rays up to four.

The competition is slated to continue this coming weekend at the same venue.
