Records fall as Good Shepherd and St. Alban’s repeat at NAPSAC

Nothing! Not the other teams nor the rain were enough to stop the Honey Badgers and the Jaguars from reclaiming their respective titles this year when the curtain came down on the Andrea Blackett Zone of the 2020 National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships (NAPSAC). Getting their paws on a massive 263 points in the Boys, the Badgers of St. Alban’s were well ahead of the rest of the pack, while the Good Shepherd Jaguars roared to 231 to stand head and shoulders over all others at the National Stadium.

Good Shepherd will be shaping up to do well in the finals as they finished second in the Boys with 176 points, while St. Cyprian’s Boys’ (170), Selah (143) and Welches (82) rounded out the top five. In the Girls, Selah was second on 165, while some surprise performances saw St. Joseph coming up the ladder with 155. St. Alban’s (151) and Ellerton (85) were fourth and fifth.

On a day that was overcast, the rain was not the only thing to fall as records tumbled left, right and centre. St. Alban’s led the charge there as Eliezer Williams knocked down three himself as he gave his team 30 points to take the Under-11 Boys’ championship.

Williams was an absolute dynamo, breaking the records in all his events. In the 300-metre, he ran 45.74 seconds to displace an old time of 47.21. In the 200, the mark was 28.53 seconds but the ten-year-old was able to shave off a bit to leave a new time of 28.41. The 100-metre saw him posting 13.88 seconds from an old mark of 14.07.

Williams was not alone from St. Alban’s and Isaiah Marshall also ended with 30 points in the Under-13 Boys, taking down two old records at the same time. Winning the 100-metre in 13.48 seconds, it was in the 200 and 400 where he shone brightest – putting up 27.22 in the 200 and 1:03.89 in the 400-metre.

Karesha Thompson was also in the money for the Honey Badgers as she amassed 28 points from her three events to finish atop the Under-11 Girls. She came home second in the 100-metre in a time of 15.27 behind St. Joseph’s Dion Grant (15.04). However, she switched spots with Grant in the 200-metre, winning the Gold in 31.03. She too took down an old mark of 52.47 to leave a new one of 50.29 in the 300-metre. In fact, St. Joseph’s Keira Phillips (50.85) and Grant also came in under the old time.

Good Shepherd also got in on the action with Jayden Cummins knocking off two records as well. He fell to second in the race for the Under-13 championship with 28 points, but left his mark in the Long Jump with 4.42 metres and 1.32 metres in the High Jump. He was second in the Cricket Ball Throw behind Jahidi Hinds of St. Silas Primary.

Kiami-Rae Orford, also of Good Shepherd, was the top girl in the Under-13s and she racked up 30 points. Posting 1:11.04 minutes in the 400-metre and 3.65 metres in the Long Jump for wins, her best moment came when she put down 1.33 metres in the High Jump for the Gold Medal and a new record.

Taryn Brathwaite of Selah took the Under-9 Girls’ title with 30 points after she won the 80-metre (12.99), the 100 (16.05) and the Long Jump. She also left her mark on the competition with 3.15 metres in the Long Jump, eclipsing the old leap of 2.82 metres. The final record of the day fell in the Open Boys’ 800-metre Sprint Medley as St. Alban’s ran it in 2:05.24 minutes to knock off the old time of 2:05.73.
