Rain has big say on first Ballr match at Kensington

Rain! With the the final leg of the Ballr Cup Tri-Nations One Day International Series, between Australia, South Africa and host West Indies moving to Barbados the match between Australia and South Africa was affected by rain yesterday.

The tournament has been played in Guyana and St Kitts thus far, with each team winning two of their four matches and losing two.

West Indies have eight points, two behind leaders South Africa, with Australia second on nine.

Th planned 1 p.m. start came off but then the showers came after Australia had won the toss and sent South Africa to bat.

Only one over, which included three wides by left hand pace bowler Mitchell Starc, was bowled and South Africa reached eight without loss as the players retreated to the dressing room a mere ten minutes into the came.

For the next three hours and 30 minutes the covers remained on the square as the rain never looked to be letting up, until the drizzles stopped soon after that and the covers were removed.

An inspection of the pitch was held at 5:15 p.m. and the umpires decided to hold another inspection due a half hour later.

However, the rain was expected to return around 6 p.m. as a tropical wave was affecting the island and the forecast was for more periods of rain and possible isolated thunderstorms.

The West Indies are slated to start their campaign at Kensington Oval tomorrow (Tuesday) against Australia before taking on South Africa on Friday. The final is slated for Sunday. (CG)
