Queens play to help Barbados Cancer Society

The ladies came out in fine form for the inaugural Queen of the Green competition which saw Sherri “De Shepherd” Shepherd play to the top of the mountain for the coveted first title.

The venue was Tiami Cruise Terminal where some of the best ladies on the island stepped up to the table for not just glory but a good cause. The funds raised from the competition were donated to the Barbados Cancer Society. The President, Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson, was on hand to watch the women play.
With a first round of 16 women, Sherri “De Shepherd” Shepherd made her games look easy. She took on Rea “Phoenix” Woolford and defeated her 3-1 to advance to the second stage where she met Alicia “Double A” Archer. Archer had reached the second round via the 3-1 route as well but De Shepherd guided her off the table and out of the competition 3-0.

It was the semi-finals next which saw Shepherd play Receda “Ceda” Clarke. It was a another level but the result was much the same, 4-0 and onto the finals. There she found Rebecka “Celeste” Carter who had shone well throughout the rounds. She advanced from the first with a 3-0 round against Valerie “Iron Maiden” Layne. It was a competitive second round when she played Lisa “Storm” Frederick which went down to the wire 3-2.

Carter earned her way to the finals and she was a good match-up for Shepherd who was yet to lose a single game. The two ladies played their hearts out on the green top but Shepherd was able to edge ahead and take the decider to be crowned the first Queen of the Green 5-4. Afterward she took on the Regional Queen from St. Lucia Ashley James and finally lost to an opponent with a 4-5 scoreline. Fortunately, afterwards James was disqualified from the competition and Shepherd took the win. (AS)
