Quarterfinalists for YDP/NSC tourney decided

At the end of last night all of the quarterfinalists in the 2019-2020 Youth Development Programme National Sports Council Football Competition should have been decided.

With games set for Brereton and Dover the second half of the final eight should have been set in stone. However, up until press time, on the first half had shown their faces.

Playing this past Sunday evening at Friendship at 4 pm, City of Bridgetown came home with the goods to get past St. Philip North. It was almost an open-and-close case as the City boys had their opponents down by two at the half-time break. Kobe Shepherd put them on in the 14th minute through a penalty kick while Kemar John added the second in the 26th. St. Philip North would pull one back in the second half but that would be all they could muster before the end of the game.

The other game at Friendship was a cracker as underdogs St. Lucy came from behind to trump football hot-bed Christ Church East-Central, 2-1. Over at Speightstown, St. Michael East made the most of the extra time awarded after a 0-0 scoreline at the end of regulation time. They knocked home two goals while St. Michael North were forced out of the tournament after failing to score.

The nightcap game at Speightstown went into extra time as well but there was still no clear winner so the clash had to be decided at the penalty spot. With St. James North and St. Michael North-East both scoring a goal each, the result remained tied even at the end of the additional time. When the final spot kick was taken, the St. Michael side stood victorious as they won the game, 4-3.

Last night’s games saw Christ Church West-Central and St. John and St. Michael South and St. George South playing at Dover. The other fixtures were slated to have St. Thomas and St. Michael South-East and St. Michael South-Central and St. Philip West face off at Brereton.

The quarterfinals are set for this coming Thursday at Briar Hall and Brereton.
