Poon and Mahtani are chess champs

After a complete seven rounds of play in the 2016 combined Under 16 & 20 national chess championship, top junior FIDE master Yu Tien Poon came out on top of the pile with seven wins to take the Under 20 championship. Nitin Mahtani finished next on five points, enough to secure the Under 16 title.

Vital results in the last round saw Poon defeat Julia Clemenston; Mahtani won from William Cannon; Gabriela Cumberbatch defeated Tristan Small; and Shane Maugh won from Segan Sandiford.

With these results, the Under 20 section saw Poon in first place with Cumberbatch in second and Clemenston in third. While in the Under 16 section, Mahtani was in first, Sandiford in second and Small in third.

Chess action will be continuing at the Bridgetown Chess Centre for the next two weeks as players battle in the second qualifier for the 2016 National chess finals. Games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 4 p.m.
