Pinelands rally past Warriors

IN a physical pound for pound match between Orange 3 Pinelands and the Barbados Hilton Resort Warriors, Pinelands kept their focus for the one-point victory over the Warriors 69-68 in their Co-operators General Insurance Barbados Amateur Basketball Association Premier League game.

Playing at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, the two teams kept it tight as they were never more than four points apart except for a ten-point lead by Pinelands before a Warriors run. Both teams hustled on the defensive end as well as running fast breaks on the offensive end to put pressure on the opponents. Jeremy Gill was the top scorer for Pinelands, leading from the front with 17 points and five rebounds in the game. There was a period of time where Pinelands seemed to panic and were shouting among themselves, but Gill stepped in and encouraged the guys to pull together and focus their frustration on the opponents. Ramon Simmons shot 6 of 16 from the field for his 15 points on the night, while Junior Moore made an effort in his contribution of 11.

The Warriors had a good game as well with three of their players scoring above 15 points. With the absence of key player Ricardo Toussaint, the strong play in and out of the key by Corey McDonald and Jamar Headley was needed. Headley had a game-high score of 20 points and made his presence felt on the glass with 13 rebounds. McDonald and Justin Maloney both scored 18 points apiece, with McDonald having eight rebounds as well to keep the Warriors in the game.

Both teams scrapped for every possession as the game went down to the wire, but after all the dust had cleared Pinelands took the win. The value of Gill was known before, but his impact in the game was monumental with his defence, especially as he read the offence of the Warriors well to come away with five steals. (AS)
