Nine race independence celebrations raceday card

The Barbados Turf Club’s first day of the third racing season, gets underway today at the Garrison Savannah, after being postponed last Saturday. Nine race are carded for the day.

The feature race on the card, is the 50th Anniversary of Independence (Handicap), for 3-year-olds and older rated 110 and below, sprinting 1100 metres.

Unfortunately only four horses are declared to face starter Mark Batson in this one, and with Knight Rider not racing for over sixteen months, and having to pick up the top weight of 130 pounds, plus the fact that 1100 metres is not his best distance, one would think that it could end up as a match race up front between Dazzling Davis and Lavani. However, horses have been know to make fools of us all. It looks like Dazzling David could be the one to beat.

In the days opening race, race fans will see five 2-year-olds racing for first time, in the Coat of Arms (Condition Race for 2-year olds (preference to imported 2y-year-olds sprinting 1000 metres. All five of them are bred in the USA. It will be interesting to see which of
them will like the underfoot conditions.

Race two, is the Pride & Industry (Handicap) for 3-year-olds and older rated 85 and below, going 1570 metres, again only four horses will face the starter. Spartacus, could be the one to beat.

Also of interest, is that in race three, the Broken Trident (Allotted Weights Race), for West Indian 2-year-old maidens) going 1100 metres, there are six locally bred 2-year-olds racing for the first time. Can any of them win first time out?

There are two Superfecta betting races on the day’s card, which are races three and eight, both are very competitive, which means that the winning punters could get a good dividend. Post time for the first race is 12:40 p.m. (CAH)
