St. George South endured a Cinderella story on their way to the top of the 2016 David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils’ Football Classic.
NEW CHAMPS
In the second half of extra time, St. George had another real chance at tipping the scales when Rosean Brathwaite moved up the left flank with no pressure on his back. Sending the cross in to find a striker, the ball was intercepted by East-Central defender Ricardio Morris and sent over line for a corner. East-Central had the last real chance with Jabarry Chandler getting fed from the right by Tyrell Gibbons. Making a move into 18 with two defenders on him, Chandler took a right-booted shot that went just wide to the right of the bars.
No goals came in extra time and the game was moved to the penalty spot. East Central began badly as Jamal Chandler sent the ball directly at Jamar Brewster to be denied. Belle got St. George South off to a hot start by pushing the ball to the right, while sending East-Central custodian Corey Bridgeman to the left. The younger of the Chandler brothers, Jabbary easily scored his conversion to put his team on the board, while Javon Austin kept St. George South up with a goal that Bridgeman barely got his hand onto.
The shocker of the night came when Darian King was successful in sending Brewster to the right with his kick. However, whilst midair, Brewster was able to put his right foot out to leave King out in the cold. The save left King dumbfounded and brought the entire area to its feet. Shakille Beckles easily converted to see St. George South to three, while Keoin Harding gave East-Central their second and last goal of the night. The winning kick came from the boot of Rosean Brathwaite.
Third place this year went to St. Michael South who whipped two-time champions City of Bridgetown four goals to one. Zico Edmee (24th), Tristan Parris(32nd), Omari Leacock (59th) and Sakem Boyce (82nd) all pitched in with a goal each as the former champions got their consolation from Enrico Cave in the 86th minute.
