National Stadium set ablaze on final day of Nationals

Ramon Gittens and Sada Williams completed the double as the curtains came down on the Athletics Association of Barbados National Championships at the National Stadium.

Gittens said he was going to have some fun in the 200m after winning the 100m on Saturday, and on Sunday he did a bit more than that as he posted an Olympic qualifying time in his winning performance.

Gittens and Levi Cadogan were locked in a battle down the straight and as they crossed the line Gittens still did not know who had won as he also looked across at Cadogan.

When the times finally came back Gittens clocked 20.42 secs and Cadogan 20.45 secs, both dipping below the Olympic 200m qualifying mark of 20.50 secs. Burkheart Ellis (20.51 secs) was third and fourth was Nicholas Deshong in 20.77 secs.

Williams had captured the 400m on Saturday and returned on Sunday to blaze her way to another National title in the 200m. Williams ran home in 22.88 secs which were also World Junior, NACAC under 23 and Olympic Games standards.

Second was the 100m winner Marissa Kurtimah from Canada was second in the 200m in 23.47secs and Akela Jones third 23.57 secs.

The 800m was a tooth and nail battle between Antonio Mascoll and Jonathan Jones. Mascoll eventually edged out Jones as they clocked two impressive times for the meet.

Mascoll stopped the clock at 1:47.00, while Jones clocked 1:48.16 for a new National Junior record, eclipsing the old record of 1:48.36.

Sade Sealy won the women’s 800m final in 2:06.79, Sonia Gaskin was second in 2:07.24 and third was Akeilia Knight 2:11.77.
