National Sports Council ladies reclaim their title

After giving way to the University of the West Indies Women Football Club in the 2015 tournament, the National Sports Council Women’s Football Team have taken the title once again in the Barbados Football Association’s Women’s League. With three games still to play, the NSC ladies have kept a clean sheet to see them to yet another championship.

Going into their ninth game of the season knowing that a win would see them take back their title from the UWI ladies, the Sports Council took Eden Stars Football Club Unity Stars to task on Sunday night at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. Kimberly Ellis got the champs off the ground in the fifth minute, while Patrina Brathwaite added a second in the 23rd. Going the other way, Brathwaite, or ‘Pixie’ as she is affectionately called, doubled up on her efforts to record a brace on the hour.

Unity Stars were not without any fight in them at all and Rianna Cyrus gave her team a consolation in the 89th minute. However, Tianna Hackett rebutted the very next minute to see the game end at four goals to one.

With any chance of repeating last year’s win already sunk, UWI just let themselves go and they gifted a ‘ten-man’ Technique their first points for the season. Having lost all eight of their previous games, yet another one was expected for Technique Football Club at the end of the night. However, a brace from Shamanda Carter saw UWI going down a third time for the tournament.

Both teams were able to keep each other searching by the end of the first half, but Carter came close to the top of the second to put her team ahead in the 57th. She struck again in injury time to make the final score a stunning two-nil for UWI.

The evening’s first match saw Mavericks Women and Braddie’s Bar Pinelands breaking even with a goal apiece. Tiana Bynoe put the Pinelands women on first in the 28th minute. However, the tournament’s top-scorer Felicia Jarvis added another goal to her collection in the 45th to tie things up once again.
