MP Donville Inniss donates sporting equipment to constituency

St James South Member of Parliament Hon Donville Inniss donated several pieces of sporting equipment to teams in his constituency.

The donation was made yesterday at the Desmond Haynes Complex in Holders Hill as cricket gear, netballs and footballs were handed out to members of the various teams of the community.

During the handing over ceremony, Inniss said “our youth are being portrayed as being ever so negative and deviant but they are youngsters who are doing something positive with their life.”

“If the media and responsible adults would recognise and celebrate the good things that the young people are doing and highlight and use the same cell phones and social media and traditional media to highlight the good things that the young people are doing perhaps it would help some of those deviant youth to start to think of how they can make a more positive contribution to their society.”

Inniss said that he believes, “We as adults are not doing enough to guide the young people of this society. We cannot throw our hands in the air and say that is somebody else business it is our business to help shape their minds and guide them in the right direction.”

As he celebrated and recognised the sporting members of the community, Inniss mentioned that, “We have an opportunity in this community to recognise the importance of sporting activities and educational opportunities that go beyond the traditional school system.”

“As we look around Barbados today, I would say that Haynesville has been a success, thanks to leaders such as Peter Skeete and others being involved and directing the youths of this community, we have seen a fall off in deviant behaviour and we have seen a massive upswing in positive thoughts and attitudes and conduct of our young people.”

“It only goes to show that you don’t need the police to come in and solve these issues. If as responsible adults we identify a few and we decide to get up and do something about it it could make a big difference in the lives of our young people.

A presentation by some visiting Guyanese members was made to some expecting young mothers as well. (CG)
