Milton Lynch wins chess contest

Milton Lynch Primary “A” team put in a tremendous second day to eventually emerge winners of the 2017 Primary interschool team chess championship held last Saturday at the St. Michael School, Martindale’s Road.

Milton Lynch “A” pushed into the lead after round 4 when they swept Peoples Cathedral “B” 10-0 to move to 30 points. There were wins for the team of Christian Gill, Kimarhi Holder, Kevion Perch, Damani Layne and Hasani Sandiford. This went well, as the two leaders, Lawrence T Gay “A” and defending champions Charles F Broome “A”, battled to a bruising 5-5 draw. This now left Lawrence T Gay “A” on 29 points and Charles F Broome “A” on 28 points respectively and with two more rounds left, all three teams remained in contention.

However it was Milton Lynch “A” who held their nerves over the final rounds as they dropped fewer matches and claimed first place with 46 points out of a possible 60, after crushing St. Judes 8-2 in the final round. The outstanding performers for Milton Lynch “A” were Kevion Perch – who won all six of his individual games – and Damani Layne who scored maximum each of the four times he came to the board for his team.

Lawrence T Gay finished second on 41 points after a final round win 6-4 over Milton Lynch “B”. Charles F Broome “A” finished third on 39 points with a final round victory over Peoples Cathedral “A” by a 7-3 margin. A little disappointing considering that their board one and two players Vanessa Greenidge and Jadyn Gill won all of their games.

Other last round results saw Lawrence T Gay “B” win over Peoples Cathedral “B” 6-4, Wills Primary defeating Lawrence T Gay “C” 6-4 and Charles F Broome “B” and St. Gabriels drawing 5-5.
