Confirmed COVID-19 cases have forced the stoppage of BFA events.

Local football latest to fall to coronavirus

Football in Barbados was brought to a grinding halt yesterday as a result of the confirmation of the first cases of COVID-19 in the island.

Just after the virus had gifted the island with an extra day to play games in the Coca Premier League, yesterday’s late-morning announcement saw it being taken away.

With regional body Concacaf suspending all of its competitions, this coming Sunday’s proposed Nations League fixture against Guyana was one of the casualties. As a result, the Barbados Football Association sought to make use of the day and rescheduled three matches, which was made known to members of the media through an email received in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

However, after Minister of Health and Wellness, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic made the announcement, a circular to member clubs was released stating that all football and related activities under their banner were suspended.

With the BFA going on to thank its members for their understanding and promising to keep them updated as the situation develops, the correspondence highlighted the activities affected by the new discovery.

“For us at the BFA the well-being of our workers, support staff and all individuals participating in our programmes and activities is very important. With this in mind, we have been monitoring the evolving health situation and concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19. Considering the present recommendations and directives of the Barbados Government, we have taken the decision to suspend the activities below; the Coca Cola Premier League, Division One League, the National Youth Cup and the 2020 Annual General Meeting,” it read.
