Kolij, Foundation walk away zone champs on Day 2

After leading at the end of Day 1 in the Sol Esther Maynard Zone, Christ Church Foundation and Harrison College held off all others to retain the Girls’ and Boys’ titles respectively as the 2020 edition of the Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships rages on. With the curtain coming down on the zone at the National Stadium yesterday, there was very little question as to who the winners were as Foundation racked up 483.5 points in the girls and Harrison College amassed 425.5 to win the boys.

Both teams are expected to do very well at the championship level as they seconded each other, with Harrison College getting up to 336 in the girls and Foundation raking in 340 in the boys. The fight on the day was for third in both categories and the Alleyne School copped the spot in both. They had 305.5 in the girls and 279.5 in the boys.

On a day with stellar performances all around, 10 new zonal records were put up as athletes let it all hang out. On the track, Layla Haynes of Harrison College showed why she remains the gold standard in distance running with a time of 2:18.99 minutes in the Under-17 800-metre to knock back a time of 2:21.88 put down by Charissa Moore in 2017.

Alleyne’s Aniya Nurse was good for 63.95 in the Under-13 Girls’ 400-metre to displace Brieanna Boyce’s old time of 63.97. Nurse also razed the rest of the field in the 100 to clock 13.17 for the win. Despite having an old mark erased, Boyce did well in her new division and took home the win in the Under-17 300-metre Hurdles (45.71) and second in the 200-metre (25.43) behind Kishawna Niles of Deighton Griffith.

The other record to fall on the ultramarine and gold track was the 2019 Kele Hope time of 4:56.10 minutes in the Junior Boys’ 150-metre. Fynn Armstrong of Harrison College had the new mark, finishing well ahead of the pack in 4:43.34. There were also solid performances coming out of Coleridge and Parry as Mekhi Griffith won the Under-17 400-metre Hurdles in 55.71 seconds and ran second in the 200-metre in 22.23 behind St. George’s Jamarco Gill (22.11).

Seven records were put up in the field with three of them being posted first and Foundation’s Selena Johnson had the honour of becoming the first zonal winner in the Open Girls’ Triple Jump. She leapt 11.97 metres to beat the rest of the field. The Under-17 Boys’ Triple Jump went to Azarian Weekes of Harrison College with 13.44 metres while the Under-20 edition went to Nathan Crawford-Wallace of Foundation with 15.57 metres.

The pit is not the only place where Crawford-Wallace shone as he recorded 1.84 metres in the High Jump to win the event and was second to Harrison College’s Kaelin King (13.76) in the Under-20 Shot Put with a throw of 11.78 metres.

The Girls’ Under-17 Discus saw Ronasha Phillips of Lester Vaughan pushing Simone Carroll’s distance of 27.59 metres from 2016 aside as she threw 29.54. Alleyne’s Kaitlyn Smith helped her school to their third-place finish in the Junior Girls’ Discus with 23.30 metres. She knocked down 22.59 by Julisa Jones-Smith in 2016.

In the Under-17 Boys’ Shot Put, Kasim Connell of Coleridge and Parry threw 13.64 to win the event while Tyrique Bailey-Edwards of Alleyne was second. Both athletes beat Josh LaRose’s 13.02 from the zone in 2016. The Junior Boys’ Shot Put saw Jaleel Grosvenor of St. George Secondary throwing 12.61 metres to edge out Imani Austin’s distance of 12.10 from 2018.

The Frank Blackman Zone gets off the ground today at the National Stadium with the St. Michael School going after the girls’ title again while Queen’s College will be looking for a repeat in the boys.
