Kingz of the Court still on the cards

The regular out-of-season Kingz of the Court tournament held by Junior Cummins is still on the cards despite such a long Barbados Amateur Basketball Association First Division season.

This is the 9th year of the tournament and it is slated to begin early November. In order to complete the tournament well before Christmas, it will take a smaller format than previous years due to the late start. Pinelands took the title last year while City United took it the year before. Players such as National players Junior Moore and Charles Vanderpool were part of the Pine side last year while former National player Sidney Bouncer Rowe played for City the year before. The tournament brings out some of the best in Barbados for friendly competition and keeps basketball playing throughout the offseason.

Cummins has always had the future of Barbadian basketball at heart and has maintained youth teams based out of the YMCA over the years. Pirates and Kingz are two teams which have been around for years and play a key role in the competition. Cummins stated that the goal of the tournament is to put the proceeds made from the competition towards an Under 14 basketball tournament planned for next year. Some of the work has already started including the acquisition of rims and backboards for the tournament. A mini-ring structure has to be built to hold these rims and backboards and some of the proceeds will be used for this.

Teams interested in playing in the tournament are asked to contact Cummins as soon as possible as the start of the tournament is almost here. There are currently no sponsors on board as yet but the cause for the tournament is a good one. It helps to provide a constructive environment over the off season that those youngsters looking to show case their talents can do so under the referees whistle.

Any help would be appreciated and dates and times will be sent out via social media so that fans of the game can come watch and enjoy at the YMCA. (AS)
