King on target

WITH three rounds to go and three points ahead, Ronald “Suki” King is well placed to retain the Masters title in the Henderson Layne Memorial Draughts competition.

Following carnage in the previous two rounds, the front runners have been playing with increased caution. King drew with Richard Grazette and Darwin “King of Cross” Lorde on Thursday at the Christ Church Girls’ School while defending champion and second-placed Junior “Post” Walrond drew with Carson Farley and Rawle “School Boy” Williams.

Williams has had an excellent tournament and with King are the only unbeaten players with two rounds coming on Sunday, also at the school and a wrap-up 12th round on Monday. Williams, Farley, Grazette, Lorde and Michael Barker are locked on 20 points with Ian Callender and Jeffrey “Socks” Clarke on 19 apiece.

There was the odd big surprise in the Majors where Anderson “Brickford” Hunte holds the lead by a slender two points (28) from brother Hascol Trotman. Hunte defeated Andrew Harris 1-0 and drew with Bertram Alleyne, while Trotman drew with Cleveland Yarde and edged out Adrian Jordan 1-0. Barnett defeated Yarde 1-0 and drew with Edward Moore.

Andrew “Lion” Harris, who can do exceedingly better, also lost to Wynell Neverson 1-0. Neverson has apparently fired one or two coaches and is now being handled by Richard Grazette. She also defeated Eric “Fireman” Rice 1-0.
