Sherwyn Nurse, nephew of the late Seymour Nurse, makes a presentation on behalf of his uncle to Dr. Lisa Belle, Head of the Professor George Nicholson Artificial Kidney Unit. Looking on were BCA Vice President Calvin Hope and Debica Hall, General Manager of Cricket Legends of Barbados.

Kidney Unit welcomes donation

A donation in the name of the late Seymour Nurse was made to the Professor George Nicholson Artificial Kidney Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday.

The Artificial Kidney Unit had cared for the late, great West Indian cricketer and with the help of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and Cricket Legends of Barbados, the donation was made. Speaking on behalf of the BCA, Vice President Calvin Hope explained the reason for the donation and said that he hoped it would be put to good use by the unit to care for those who suffer from kidney-related issues.

“Mr. Nurse had received excellent care from the Renal Unit and had ongoing dialysis and for the gratitude by his daughters, they asked the Barbados Cricket Association to arrange for a collection of some funds at the funeral.”

The proceeds from that collection at the funeral last year, was combined with contributions from other entities and persons. The presentation was made by nephew Sherwyn Nurse to Dr. Lisa Belle, Head of the Professor George Nicholson Artificial Kidney Unit. Dr. Belle extended sincere gratitude to the family of the late legend and highlighted her experience with the cricketer was a pleasant one with Nurse portraying a kind, humble and quiet character.

“It is always very heartwarming to recognise when people just step forward without any specific aim in mind other than to just help others.”

Dr. Belle went on to say that the unit was grateful and did have challenges economically, especially with the increasing number of patients being cared for with kidney disease and those in need of dialysis. (AS)
