Katrina Small and Kuron Griffith complete sprint double

Katrina Small completed the Women’s Sprint double over the weekend at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, while Kuron Griffith showed his form was not a one-off to also complete the men’s double.

There was less than ideal condition for the athletes on Sunday as there was a tropical wave affecting the island and this brought plenty of rain, though it did stop at times.

The final women’s event on Sunday was the 200m and Small was in Lane 6 with her main rival behind her. It was Rickyla Fagan who had the better start of the contenders and ran a good curve to lead as they turned for home. But Small transitioned as she hit the straight and started to power away from the field to claim the victory in the final in 24.79 secs.

Asia Foster (25.33 secs) closed in the final few meters to narrowly edged out the early race leader Fagan (25.37 secs) for second place as Fagan faded at the end.

Small won the 100m (11.98 secs) on the Saturday and it was the quarter miler winner Foster (56.70 secs) who many thought would be her closest challenger if she was able to be closer when they completed the curve.

In the men’s 200m, Griffith was once again running against he clock as he made up the stagger on the three athletes on his outside by the time they finished the first 50m.

Despite the cold conditions and wet track, Griffith’s execution was still good to cross the line in 20.91 secs. This was almost a full second ahead of the second place finisher Desean Boyce (21.78 secs), while third place was a close affair between Jebarri Cumberbatch (22.13 secs) and Mekhi Griffith (22.15 secs).

Kuron Griffith has been consistent as he clocked 20.99 secs at the May Classic last month.

He was also the winner of the 100m over the weekend with a time of 10.41 secs lowering his previous time of 10.58 secs which was at the May Classic and into a similar head wind of over -1 m/s.

Josiah Parris completed the double as he came from winning the 400m (49.13secs) in the Under-18 Boys and returned to win the 200m in 22.05 secs ahead of Amari Knight 22.61 secs and Amani Mascoll-Beckles. Knight was running out of lane 8 and did well to hold on to second after being initially passed by Mascoll-Beckles in the curve.

In the girls 200m under-18 there was no catching Kishawna Niles who ran away with the victory in 24.21 secs from Nya Browne (26.22 secs) and Tionce Walrond (26.26 secs).

Justina Bishop won the women’s 800m  (2:50.94) from Zhaiel Price (2:52.29) and Rania Roberts (2:52.37).

The men’s 800m winner was Miguel Nicholas as he was the only one to dip below the two minute mark with 1:58.75. Second place went to Daemon Dawson who has a time under two minutes but was just over this time in 2:00.58. Third was Shem Boyce (2:01.76).

In the 100m women’s sprint hurdles there was not stopping Kierre Beckles who won in a new meet record of 13.52 secs from Ayanna Morgan in 13.89 secs. Third was Adeyah Brewster in 14.27 secs.

The girls 100m hurdles under-18 it was Nya Browne who won in 14.88 secs after clipping an early hurdle . She won from Maliah Edwards in 14.92 secs. Skye Spencer-Lane was third in 15.98 secs.

Jadon Pearce won the Boys 110m hurdles under-18 with a time of 14.80 secs,. (CG)
