Juniors showcase impressive skills at Karting event

Motorsport fans were wowed with some of the best Kart racing and young driver skills on the island this year at Bushy Park last Sunday for round eight of the SDRR Motorsports/Cheffette Restaurants Barbados Karting Association 2016 Championship.

In mixed track conditions caused by the weather conditions the action started in wet conditions with competitors having to switch from the normal racing slicks and go to the grooved rain tyre design that pumps the water away and produced rooster tails of water and spray from them for Practice session, Qualifying session and the first two races. The track conditions then dried up enough for the competitors to switch back to the normal racing Slick for the last three races in their group races.

Starting the day off as usual were the youngsters in the 60cc EasyKart Class, these kids range from six-year-olds to 12-year-olds, boys and girls competing in identical 60cc powered IAME engines producing 8HP & Birel designed Chassie Karts. They were on rain tyres for Qualifying and the surprise was youngest driver in class six-year-old Daniel Ullyett putting in his best qualifying performance to date. Third was Alex Powell, second Charlie Kerridge and starting on pole Calem Maloney with the fastest time of 62.383 seconds.

As the conditions changed during the three class races the overall points for the day changed when points leader Calem Maloney and Kyffin Simpson got involved in a racing incident and unfortunately for young Maloney, he was unable to finish the race and was not able to complete a hat-trick of wins for the day.
